GROUPS
- Group work, discussions, problem solving
- Training - role playing, stage performances, skill training
- Learning from others, following examples
- Individual support within the group - personal assistance, support with doing tasks
- Development of social and communication skills
The Groups are regular meetings focused on concrete topics of everyday life. Participants discuss and solve given problems and try out concrete solutions of problematic situations. We mostly use learning by performing particular scenes and training appropriate skills. A staff member, that is present in the group, brings out the topics, moderates the actions and offers support if asked. Our goal is to substantially develop communication and social skills. That could mean, for example, to learn not to interrupt when other people speak, to voice one's own opinion, to make agreement on something, to be able to ask for help, to learn to phone, to face to and respond to criticism, to make decisions, to try new ways of behaving in certain situations and their solving etc."Humans are social beings that often seek informal groups of people."
What can a person gain in the group:
- meet new people
- get information, facts and experience in various areas of everyday life
- learn to speak in front of several other people
- learn to speak in particular/general terms about things, issues
- learn to voice their opinion more clearly and respect the views of others
- learn not to interrupt when other people speak, to give them the space for expression
- learn to ask for help, to recognize where and when it is needed
- skills in group work - to work together, in team, to make agreement, to moderate the group, to write the report
Case example:
Martin is a young man who started coming to the group at the beginning of the year At first he almost did not interact, responding to every question along the lines of "I cannot know this," "you cannot ask that from me" and "tell me what YOU think about it." But the situation started to change gradually as other group members asked Martin his opinion on various matters and wanted to hear what he thinks about it. With time he has begun to dare to respond more directly. These days Martin answers common questions quite clearly, thinks about what he likes and does not like or does not want. With more difficult questions he is able to reflect on how hard it is for him to make a choice from more options and he can manage to tell the group about it. During the pretty long course of his coming to the group, Martin also started to join more in its activities; he became a good moderator, cares about interests of the group and is one of its most active participants.
